I’ve called it a breakdown Margery called it a “great bodily sickness, through which she lost her reason for a long time,” and commented later, more precisely, that “this creature went out of her mind and was amazingly disturbed and tormented with spirits for half a year, eight weeks and odd days.” She always referred to herself as “this creature” – that is, part of the Creation. She called it “a short and comforting treatise for sinful wretches,” and her intention was to display divine activity in her life after she met God in person during a breakdown following the birth of her first child. It was the first autobiography in the English language, although Margery didn’t think of it that way. Margery Kempe was an English woman of the late 14 th, early 15 th centuries who “wrote” a kind of memoir – dictated it, really, as she couldn’t read or write. It’s a list of the stories I consider best as well as my individual thoughts on them.īut now, let us continue on with my ranking of the six Stephen King short story collections. If you are, however, more interested in a more detailed list of short stories, I urge you to check out the list of my favorite Stephen King short stories. It’s not only to rank but to also share my thoughts on each Stephen King short story collection out there. That’s the reason I created this short list. While I enjoyed most of his short stories and each one of his collections, I found some of them more impressive and worthwhile than others. Over the past months, I read every single Stephen short story collection. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King seemed like a logical next step. Since I’m a horror writer myself, I recently decided to read more horror literature myself. Westman, a practicing internist and low-carb diet researcher, to bring you the crystal-clear information you need to understand what a ketogenic diet is and why it may be the missing element in your pursuit of optimal health. Jimmy Moore, a leading low-carb diet blogger and podcaster, has reunited with his Cholesterol Clarity co-author Dr. Have you looked at a low-carb diet simply as a means to lose weight? What if you learned that combining a low-carb nutritional approach with a high fat intake produces a powerful therapeutic effect on a wide variety of health conditions that most people think requires medication to control? That’s what Keto Clarity is all about. Simply eating a low-carb diet alone isn't enough, and Moore and Westman tell you why. Westman join forces again to explain the powerful therapeutic effects of a ketogenic diet-one that combines a customized carbohydrate restriction, moderation of protein intake, and real food-based fats-which is emerging in the scientific literature as a means for improving a wide range of diseases, from Type 2 diabetes to Alzheimer's and more. Leading health blogger Jimmy Moore and researcher and internist Dr. Its amazing, in hindsight, how much clarity Coupland had about (one segment of) this generation, and how well his critique has held up over twenty-plus years.Ĭosmopolitan blurbed the book as “a modern-day Catcher in the Rye.” That may be going a bit far. Generation X’s chapter titles are as thick as its content: Our Parents Had More. He coined phrases to describe the previously undefined cohort following the Boomers, such as McJobs (“low pay, low prestige, low benefits, low future”), option paralysis (“the tendency, when given unlimited choices, to make none”), and conspicuous minimalism (“the nonownership of material goods flaunted as a token of moral and intellectual superiority”). The concept: they tell each other stories–some personal, some invented–as they try to manufacture meaning for their underwhelming lives.ĭouglas Coupland defined a generation with his novel Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture. The characters: three twenty-something friends–Andrew, Dag, and Claire–who are underemployed, overeducated, floundering. The setting: the Southern California desert, 1991. Nevery asks Conn what his name is, and then shouts a spell that saves Conn from certain death. Suddenly, the stone becomes cold and heavy and begins to pull Conn into a dark hole. While at the dinner table The wizard, whose name is Nevery, tells Conn that his locus magicalicus will probably kill him. The stone begins to glow brightly, and the man who we now know as a wizard comes back and invites Conn to dinner. What he gets is a wizard’s locus magicalicus, a special stone that lets a wizard use magic. He sees a man in the streets, and pickpockets him. The story opens with the introduction of a young thief named Connwaer. I recommended it to both my mom and my dad, and when they read it, they liked it too! As you can clearly see, this is a good book for all ages, though I think that it is geared more towards readers in their teens. The Magic Thief is one of my all-time favorite books. ‘I’m sure thribble isn’t grammar,’ Anthea said. ‘The ones _I_ got are all right,’ Jane said ‘I know they are, because the man at the shop said they were worth thribble the money–‘ ‘They were jolly cheap,’ said whoever it was, and I think it was Robert, ‘and suppose they didn’t go off on the night? Those Prosser kids would have something to snigger about then.’ It began with the day when it was almost the Fifth of November, and a doubt arose in some breast–Robert’s, I fancy–as to the quality of the fireworks laid in for the Guy Fawkes celebration.
